Grandma Mindy took Dodge and I to see the Little Mermaid at Tuacahn. It.Was.Amazing. Dodge loved every minute of it. I had never seen them flood the stage at Tuacahn before. It was so cool. I loved everything about this play. The music was awesome, and I love how they used water, a lot of water. Sebastian's voice was amazing. He had the most ridiculous range I've ever heard. Seriously, amazing. The boy who played flounder was only 11. Dodge got to meet him after the show and he was so excited. Dodge wants to be in a play now. Thanks Grandma for a great night!

Dodge loved baseball this year. Though they don't keep score at the games, coach kept track and they only lost one game. The kids were so excited when they got trophies after the last game. It was hilarious! Dodge is so proud of his trophy.

I can't believe Katie is a high school graduate. It seems like just yesterday she was putting cats in the freezer to cool them down! Katie, I am so excited for you to go to college. I am glad you will be close enough to visit often. You are an amazing and beautiful woman and I have no doubt that you will do everything you put your mind to. I love you!

The kids love making s'mores at Grandma and Papa Johnson's. Dodge will toast a million marshmallows and only eat one s'more. Addison prefers to eat the chocolate and marshmallows separately. One of the blogs I follow posted some great s'mores ideas that we are going to have to try this summer. You can check them out HERE.

We have been taking advantage of all the splash pads around town. I took my camera and thought I would get a bunch of great summer fun pictures... yep, I only ended up taking about four pictures, and only two turned out at all. Oh well, at least I try. The kids love the splash pad by the library. It has a bunch of rocks and a waterfall. They would spend all day there I swear. If I don't blog much this summer, you can assume we are out swimming trying to keep cool in this St. George summer heat.

The Nap Time Debate...

Addison is a great napper. She will nap for an hour and a half everyday. She started waking up at 3:00 am and not going back to sleep for an hour and a half. Not.Fun. I decided to try and (Gasp!)wean her off of nap time. I figured we would try with napping only every other day and see if that helped. I love, love, love nap time, however, I don't love missing out on sleep at night because of it. The waking up at night has completely stopped since we have changed her routine. On the days that Addison doesn't get her nap, she usually ends up falling to sleep early in weird places... I thought I'd share a funny one.

I remember falling asleep holding my head in this same position after working a night shift then heading to class. Makes me wonder how I ever made it through Nursing School.

Dodge's Last Day of 1st Grade

Today is Dodge's last day of 1st grade. Dodge has done so well this year in school. We are so proud of him. He had such a great class and an amazing teacher. We are looking forward to a fun summer before moving on to 2nd grade. I'm not looking forward to saying I have a second grader, that would make me, like, really old.

First up, Easter. I think I am the worst at taking pictures when it comes to Easter. Not only
did the kids get up and devour half the candy before I even got out of bed, but once I was up I only took one picture. Notice Addison's mouth, stuffed completely full of jelly beans. She had probably ten eggs worth of jelly beans, and it wasn't even 7:00 am! Dodge found a Lego game and it was all over. Who cares about eggs when you can play Robo Champ? The kids seemed to enjoy loading up on candy before heading to church. Grandma Mindy had a treasure hunt at her house for each of the kids. Addison did really well finding all the spots. She had fun with it. Maybe next year I will get a picture of them in their Easter Sunday Dress.... I wouldn't hold your breath though.

Ryan finished Spring League Softball. Monday night, the Johnson Appraisal team took 1st place again. Wednesday night, the AAA team took second place. Ryan has played amazingly this last season. He has been hitting a lot of homers. It has been fun to watch when we can.

Another notable achievement of Ryan's recently: he shot a 76 golfing the other day. He was only 3 over par for 18 holes. It was awesome. Don't worry, the scorecard is being proudly displayed on the fridge. I doubt it's coming down anytime soon.

Lastly, Dodge's soccer season has wrapped up. He enjoyed playing soccer but now that baseball has started, he assured me that soccer was fun, but baseball is his favorite. Papa Dan is coaching and Ryan is assistant coach. Ryan has been pitching to the kids. He prefers to pitch during softball, but he does a good job with the kids too. Hopefully I can get some video on here if blogger will work with me, it is pretty funny watching Dodge play 1st... he throws his glove in the air, jumps on the base, talks with the people on the sidelines. That kid cracks me up. Well. I guess that is about it for my updates. Hopefully it won't be another big break between now and my next post, I'm not making any promises though.

I have a billion things I need to post, but first, I have to show off my latest project: The entryway to our home. It needed a serious face-lift so I got super obsessive and did a few things on my to-do list. Here is the finished entryway:

About my monogrammed acid mirror. It is so hard to get a good picture of a mirror! have to give credit to Mandi @ Vintage Revivals for the mirror tutorial. I loved her acid mirrors so I made my own version. I found the mirror for $8 at DI and added some trim to the inside. It took a lot of time, patience, love, and even a bloody knuckle to get it done but It was so worth it.

I got the idea for the "console" table from ana-white you can find it here I started with the console table plan and made a bunch of changes. I added ten inches to the height, and 3 inches to the depth, two shelves, and trim around the top. I distressed the seams on the breadboard top to shanty it up a bit. It was actually really easy to build, only took me about an hour and a half after winging it with the changes I wanted to make. The sanding and painting took for-ev-er! I guess that's what I get for buying super cheap lumber. This project only cost me $37 to make because I only needed the wood and paint. Much better than the $150 and up it would cost to buy a similar piece. The awesome thing is, it is exactly what I wanted and is 100% original.

So there you have it, my revamped entryway!

Dixie Escalante Electric Kite Festival - April 16th, 2011

Dodge's school sends home reading calendars for the kite festival each spring. If they read enough minutes, they can get a free book or kite at the Kite Festival. They give out really awesome kites too. This year, my Dad's family was down to visit during the festival, so we went and enjoyed some deep fried twinkies, free kids games, and a few rides. Of course there wasn't any wind while we were out there, so we didn't even fly kites. The kids didn't seem to mind though. I think my favorite thing was the massive tennis racket they had at one of the booths. If only we could hook up the wii remote, I am sure it wouldn't take long to break every single thing in the front room with it!

Monte L. Bean Museum

While up North for Spring Break we went to the Monte L. Bean Museum at BYU. They had a reptile show that had lots of animals for the kids to see and touch including a huge tortoise and a snake. Addison was pretty upset that she couldn't hold the snake all by herself. That girl is fearless! My favorite display was the butterflies. They had a ton of little butterflies that made up one big butterfly display. It was really pretty. We followed up the museum with ice cream from the BYU creamery. It was delish!

Thanksgiving Point

Flying Kites

One of our highlights from spring break was flying kites. My kids would do this everyday if I had the energy to take them. Luckily we only ended up with one kite in a tree. Dodge had fun getting our double stringer all sorts of twisted. Good thing I got mad untangling skills :)

Soccer

Dodge started soccer a while back and he has really been enjoying it. He prefers to be the goalie, since there isn't much running required. The poor kid never had a chance with Ryan and I for parents, we both hate to run! With a few pointers from his "Uncle" Galen, he has really been kicking the ball a lot better. There is still just one problem. . . he doesn't turn the ball toward his goal before smashing it. For example, at his last game, he kicked one with all his might towards the sideline. . . and nailed Grama Johnson right in the arm! I have a lot of pictures from his games, however most of them consist of him climbing the net, watching the other games, or dancing. Oh well, at least he is having fun!

This was his first game, he was so excited to play!

Don't worry, I have plenty more pictures to upload and blog about. With a little luck, a few nap times, and some persevering... I will eventually post them! For now, know that Dodge is keeping busy with school, soccer, and piano. Addison is rocking the potty training scene, keeping me busy with toddler shenanigans, and getting more stubborn by the day while still being completely adorable. Ryan is blowing the other softball teams out of the water in both leagues he is playing in. And I am wondering how to get everything done on my ever-growing to do list while also staying on top of the laundry and cleaning, amongst everything else in the "mom" job requirements. Apparently I need to add "learn about run on sentences" to the to do list. Don't judge me... let's just blame it on sleep deprivation... yeah, that will do :)

Updating the laundry room

So I didn't blog for over a month, I feel like I should have some excuse, but the only thing I can think to blame it on is my silhouette. I have been cutting vinyl like mad with that bad boy. I love it. I finally cut some vinyl for myself, for my laundry room. I recently, on a total whim, cleaned out my entire laundry room, appliances and all, and cleaned like mad. It was pretty scary in there. I decided while I was at it, I would build a shelf above the washer and dryer. I couldn't be happier with it. It is a great spot for my basil and parsley. It makes me like my wash room a little more, however, I still have a strained relationship with laundry... I guess I can't have it all.

now I just need something for the sides of the washer and dryer... maybe some skinny cabinets, or a locker, or some really cute sorting baskets?

I recently found Ana White. I have already made her Wall Bookholders which I will post as soon as I get them on the walls of the kids rooms. I have a billion other things I want to do too. If I don't post for a while, I am probably out in the garage... I'll post when I am finished.

Ruth could probably find a really cute cupcake, candy, or craft idea for just about any holiday. She sent us the cutest idea for groundhog cupcakes. Dodge was pretty excited to make them... or eat them I should say. They turned out cute, Don't mind Addison's, she successfully had half the face falling off by the time I could grab my camera. Don't mind her boys Buzz Lightyear underwear, or her topless state. She has taken the initiative to go to the potty on her own. Apparently she feels it necessary to remove all her clothes before she goes. I'm not gonna complain, I love that she is into the potty training at all. Anyway, Happy Groundhog Day, I am so excited that spring is on it's way.

Disneyland: We spent a day at Disneyland with a whole bunch of family; Grama and Papa Johnson, Aunt Michelle and Emma, Aunt Mandy and her girls Jane and Annie, Uncle Dennis and Aunt Patty and their girls Chelsea and Cammi. It was a fun day. We met a whole bunch of Character's at Minnie's Breakfast, rode most of our favorite rides, and had an all around good time. There were a few memorable "firsts" as well. Addison rode her first roller coaster, and Emma lost her first tooth. Thanks Grama and Papa for a day filled with family and fun. I pre-apologize for all the many pictures... I just couldn't pick which ones to post.

On the Dumbo ride, I took a picture of us. After I put my camera away and went to say something to Ryan, I noticed he had a bee on his head. Made me wonder how long it had been on that glistening dome... turns out, I caught it in our picture.

California Adventure: We spent a fun filled day at California Adventure. We headed right in to Toy Story, which was the kids favorite ride of the day. We went on Mickey's fun wheel and picked a swinging cart. Ryan almost threw up, Dodge held on to his chair with a death grip, and Addison had to cover her eyes. It was hilarious! We did Ariel's Character Lunch and got to meet a bunch of Princesses. Addison literally fell out of her seat when she saw Belle come out. The food was really good too. I really enjoyed it. The kids really enjoyed the Bug's world rides. Dodge even got to do the bumper cars all by himself. He was so excited. We went on tons of rides and took in a lot of shows. We ended the day with the World of Color, which was awesome. It really was the only thing we actually had to wait for. I wish I would have filmed some of it, but I didn't even take a picture! It was super cool, I would recommend doing the dinner and a show package so you get good seats for it. We will definitely do that instead of the lunch next time we go. They are building a cars world that opens next year. I think we will have to check it out when it is done.

We drove down to California for a couple days of fun. The kids did better than I expected in the car, it must have been the DVD players and Dodge's iPod that kept them entertained. Our first stop was at GG and Papa Cioffi's for dinner. It was so fun to have them all to ourselves for a few hours. GG made a yummy dinner and Papa made Ryan's favorite dessert: Lemon Meringue Pie (with lemon's from Papa's lemon tree!). I don't know what it is about that lemon tree, but it is magic! It was awesome. The kids enjoyed playing with GG and Papa. It was so fun to see you guys. Thank you so much for having us! We love you GG and Papa!

Snow Day! We woke up to a whole bunch of snow. Addison really wanted to make "frosty" so we got to work. The kids had a lot of fun playing in the snow. Addison tried eating some, it was a little cold. Our poor frosty didn't last too long though. He fell over by the afternoon. Addison kept saying "frosty sleeping, He go night night." it was pretty stinkin cute.

Christmas morning at the Johnson house was pretty low key this year, okay so it usually is most years. Addison was the first one up this year. Luckily it wasn't too early. We actually had to go and wake Dodge up. Dodge got his coveted iPod and Addison got a cute mommy puppy and the complete Cinderella dress up which she had to put on immediately! Thanks Santa! Dodge performed a solo in our Sacrament Christmas Program. He worked really hard and practiced a lot. He did such a great job. I have to thank Jenny Smith for working so great with him and getting him to do it. It really made the program (I am a little biased though!)

Dodge had his birthday party at Jumpin' Jacks this year. The kids had fun, I guess that what matters right. I still cannot believe our baby boy is 7 years old! Only one year and he will be getting baptized! It seems not too long ago I went into labor in the middle of my math final, poof! Seven years have passed like that. I am so proud of you Dodge. You are so smart and good. I am so glad that you have found a love for learning and reading. I love when you sing, how you play so nice with your sister (most of the time anyway), and how you are always willing to help me around the house. I love you!

We got our Christmas tree at Pine Valley this year. It was cold, and there was snow. Not our usual Christmas tree experience in southern Utah. Addison really wanted to walk in the snow and kept grabbing it with bare hands, but then she would get upset when she figured out she was freezing. Dodge had some drama with his shoes staying on. Finally, we found "the one" and Ryan got to chopping. I was helping push the tree so it would snap. Guess what happens when you do that, well, it snaps! Then I fell on the tree and nearly slid down the hill with it. I somehow managed to knock Ryan on his butt too. It was so funny. I bet we looked pretty hilarious. I should have had Dodge record us. We could have won some money on Funniest Videos. We got it home and got it decorated. I managed to knock it over in the living room. I have some serious skills with laying those trees down, I must be a tree whisperer. Addison liked playing with the ornaments, breaking the ornaments, hiding the ornaments, etc. etc. etc. It should be about Easter by the time I find all of them. So enjoy the picture I have of them decorating the tree. Compare it with the ones I will post on Christmas and you will realize just how sneaky Addison is at taking ornaments, it should be bare by then.

I swear if she weren't so darn cute, she would spend a lot more time in the time out chair!

It's a tradition that I really love. Gingerbread houses. Dodge was really creative this year are put a lot of work into his house. Addison was interested in the candy, and eating it. That was about it. They turned out pretty cute, now if only I could keep Addison from eating anymore, they might still be here for Christmas!

Dodge had the gingerbread man jumping out the side window and then getting hit by a train. He even broke him into pieces. It was pretty creative, if only a little violent. I really liked his snow fort he made.

We woke up Sunday morning to a lot of fresh snow. It was pretty horrible timing since we had to drive home in it. The kids enjoyed playing in it before we took off. Addison even liked the snow, and put up with the cold. I bet all the neighbors thought we had never seen snow before, the way Dodge was all excited to get out there and shovel it up. It was beautiful, but it made the drive extra long and scary. Luckily, we made it home without incident. We even managed to narrowly avoid getting stuck behind a wreck clean up. I definitely do not miss driving in the snow.

We went with my mom and Kaitlynn to see the Festival of Lights in Spanish Fork. It is fun to stay in the warm car, listen to the Christmas music and drive through the lights. I wish I had taken more pictures, but I was busy chatting and enjoying some time with my mom.

We went to the Winterfest Christmas Parade in downtown Provo. It was pretty chilly but since it is a small parade, you get to interact with most the people. They all handed out candy. Addison eventually got really cold and wanted to go 'back to car'. We made it until Santa came by very last on the back of a fire truck.

Addison and I were in the paper the next day. The article talked about a Ludene Moon who came up from St. George to visit family in Provo. Naturally, my family called me Ludene the rest of the trip. For the record, they got my name right in the caption. I guess you really can't believe everything you read.

After the parade, we headed to Rocky Mountain Drive Inn and got some hot cocoa and scones. It was the perfect way to end the evening. It was hilarious, because Addison was freezing after the parade but when we walked in the Drive Inn, she wanted ice cream. These kids keep me in stitches I tell ya.

We headed "Up North" this year for Thanksgiving. We got to spend time with both my mom and my dad's families. It was a cold, busy, fun weekend.

We went for a walk Thanksgiving morning. To say 'it was freezing' is an understatement. I know the pictures look all sunny and beautiful, it was, but it was definitely cold. We didn't get very far but it was nice to get out before totally gorging ourselves with the Turkey day spoils. Addison absolutely hated the cold. She kept saying, 'back to car'.

I tried to get some cute pictures of the kids, but they were cold and dripping snot-cicles so this is the best I got.

Addison liked walking Max, only a little difference between walking him and Duke... just kidding!

This was before we turned around and had to head into the freezing wind to get back to the car.

Dodge and Zeke. Dodge was so happy to have some kids to play with. Zeke and Dodge get along so well. If we lived closer, I know these two would be BFFs.

Cute decorations right! They were a pain to make but turned out to be a major hit. I hate to say it, but I don't know that I will attempt to make them again next year.

Dad, I caught you! Thanks for carving the bird... or should I say birds, there were two after all. MMmmmmm Turkey!

For those of you who don't know, this is my "other mother" Ruth (because step-mothers are evil right?) I know you don't want me to post your picture, oh well, deal with it! I love you! Thanks for letting me add to the chaos in the kitchen. I have wanted to learn the secrets to your pecan pie for years!! I loved spending time with you and Katie. It makes me wish we had spent more time together when I lived there.

Addison really liked the turkey, she kept asking for more turkey. Too bad she meant the chocolate one!

After Turkey with my dads family, we made the trek to my sister Heather's house in Hooper. It was well worth the drive to actually spend some time with all of my moms family on Thanksgiving. It was the first time since, well, since I can even remember.

I got to meet my smiley new nephew William Jay.

I promise I tried to get some good pictures of my moms family. This was the best I got. New camera, arrrgh, clearly I need to read the manual.

I am so grateful for all the blessings we have in our life. Though it seems each year that the holidays get more and more commercialized, I am so glad we have a day set aside to realize all we have and where it all comes from. I hope we can learn to have an attitude of gratitude throughout the season and the rest of the year as well.

Dodge's first field trip! He was so excited. I got to go with him and see the play 'Peter Pan' at Snow Canyon High School. I didn't get but a few pictures on the bus, but you can tell how excited he was. He loved the play. They even had them fly on wires. It was pretty fun. It is always fun to spend time with Dodge and the other kids in his class. They are so full of life and everything is so much cooler when you are a first grader.

It was fun to have family here on my birthday. We went to The Cracker Barrel for breakfast. I love their pecan pancakes! We worked off all the calories by riding our bikes... downhill! It was a fun ride and easy too! We really lucked out and didn't get rained on. It was so fun.

Dodge and Addison did a little trick-or-treating. Addison fell asleep and missed out on most of the fun. She at least got to do a few houses. She was saying "tickle-treat". It was too cute. I can't believe it is already time to get ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas!

We started the day off with Dodge's Halloween parade at school. There were so many cute and creative costumes.

That night, my sister, mom, and dad, came down to take me to Thriller for my birthday. It is always so fun to watch Thriller. It just makes me want to dance. The zombies totally freak me out though. This year, I got brave and took a picture with Katie and a zombie. The guy totally growled at me! It was a really fun night! Thanks for taking me guys!

Dodge's school had a Halloween carnival with plenty of inflatables and a few games for the kids to enjoy. Addison was hesitant to play at first, once she decided it was okay, she had fun trying to keep up with all the big kids. Dodge won quite a few prizes from games. His favorite were the shark finger puppets.

We got to have Papa and Grama and Katie down for part of the weekend and we had a blast! We ate... a lot, carved some pumkins, and explored a little of snow canyon. It is always so fun to have them visit.

We headed over to Staheli Farm this last Monday to get our pumpkins. They have a whole bunch of fun things for the kids to do. Dodge enjoyed jumping on the 'Redneck Trampoline' which was a bunch of mattresses surrounded by huge hay bales. There were some huge pipe slides into corn, a carousel with horses made out of tires, and tons more fun. We took a ride on the trailer behind the tractor to the pumpkin patch and picked our pumpkins. It was a fun family night.

I'd like to say that we are getting out and enjoying the Fall weather, however, it is still dang hot here! So I guess you could stay we are still enjoying summer here. Whenever I ask Dodge what he wants to do, he usually says "go to the river". We would probably go more if there was more time between when Dodge gets home from school and dinner. I finally played the good mom card and took the kids and the dog to the river Monday night. We found a super mud hole and the kids had a good old time while I thought of how fun it was going to be to clean out my car. Luckily, I caught myself and thought what a dumb thing to worry about. I have really been trying to enjoy the kids more lately while they are still young. Heaven knows they grow way too fast. It was fun, and messy, and a great time. I even let the car stay dirty for the day.

I just read The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease. I feel so strongly about this book that I had to post it on here with the strong suggestion that every parent read it. If you have kids and you want them to do well in school and in life, read this book, take it seriously, and read to your children every night. The book even has at the back a huge list of great read-alouds with information about each book. I didn't always read to my kids. I started when Dodge was in preschool. I have to say that it makes a huge difference in your child's life. Dodge has come to love reading. I have found that everything else comes a lot easier if you first have a strong reading background. Dodge has gained such great comprehension skills from reading and it has helped with every other aspect of school. Take some time, bond with your child and read to them. I promise, you will never regret it.

I got that hankering again tonight, you know, the one that says 'Hey Michelle, you want chocolate, you need chocolate, bake something with chocolate!' Well, I give in all to easy to the sweet stuff so I dug out my well worn out family recipe book from Ruth and figured it would meet my needs. There is this really easy delicious chocolate cake mix cookie recipe, only one problem, I didn't have chocolate cake mix. Alas, the call of the chocolate could not go unanswered so I decided to try white cake mix and white chocolate. DELISH! I like it so much, I think that I have to share with everyone else. So here ya are. Give it a try.

Cake Mix Cookies:

1 White Cake Mix
2 Eggs
1 Tbs water
1/2 Cup butter, softened

Mix together until well-blended. Add white chocolate chips (nuts if you're nutty like that). Roll into balls and dip in powdered sugar. Bake on an un-greased cookie sheet for 8-10 minutes at 375.

My mom brought her girls and came down with her friend Dana for the rodeo this last weekend. Dana has two sons that both ride bulls and one was riding in the rodeo on Saturday. We got the kids together for a little swimming at the hotel pool. It was fun to have them all try and jump in together to get some pictures. Addison thinks she is a big kid too so she jumps right in along side them. Those kids would swim all day long if they could. After some swimming we grabbed some dinner at the Pizza Factory and then headed to the Rodeo. It was a wild rodeo. All the Broncs and Bulls were bucking the riders right off. It was the craziest rodeo I've seen. We even had a cowboys thrown right into the fence in front of us and a bull kicked it's leg right through the fence and into the crowd! It was fun to spend some time with my mom and the girls, even if the bulls and broncs were a little crazy!

Goodbye Mullet! Addison got her very first big girl haircut this past Saturday. We took her to Heather, our amazing hair guru! She worked her magic and Addison's hair couldn't possibly be cuter! August 20-22, 2010: Fish Lake

We missed the fun mini-family reunion at Fish Lake in July so we made a special trip in August with Grama, Papa Mooney, and Aunt Katie. We camped in a tent and everything. It was so much fun. Although the fishing was just that . . . fishing and not catching, we still had a blast. Dodge and Addison both caught perch. I think that's just about perfect, the kids get to catch a fish, but I don't have to clean, cook, or eat it because they are too small. Addison had a blast playing in the dirt having free reign of the camp site. Dodge literally burned through an entire bag of marshmallows and even enjoyed fishing on the boat like a big kid. I figured when Dad brought out his slingshot, it would do some damage. Surprisingly enough, there was no harm from the slingshot. Dodge did manage to whack himself in the head with a hammer (a little blood and a headache but then he was fine). He also managed to go for a little dip in the stream, fully clothed. Luckily it was a little stream and he hopped right out unharmed. It was a great trip and we are so glad that Uncle Randy and Aunt Susan took some time to go too. I'm gonna have to apologize about all the pictures. There are a lot, and I wanted to put them on here.

We had my mom down this last weekend for a visit. It was so fun to have her all to ourselves. I know, we are selfish like that. It has been FOREVER since we last got to spend a whole weekend with her. We had fun playing in the pool, going to the farmers market, and just plain lounging around. It was great. We even made some yummy German Oven Pancakes with her. The kids enjoyed having her to play with. Thanks for the visit mom! We love you!

First day of First Grade. That was the quickest summer ever! Dodge was very excited to go and he really had a great first day. He loves his teacher and was so happy to see his friends and play with them at recess. He was excited to get to go to recess 3 times! He looked so big with his own desk and everything. He even had a blue eraser on his pencil, his favorite color. I love that he loves school so much.

So we found some 'caterpillars' eating away at my poor tomato plants. Five of them! Dodge had to catch them and put them in a jar with some leaves to eat. We decided to look them up and see what kind of butterflies they will be. Well, they aren't even caterpillars. They are Tobacco Hornworms and they don't even turn into butterflies. They become Five Spotted Hawkmoths after burrowing in the ground. They don't even make a cocoon! Talk about spoiling all the fun. They pretty much just destroy tomato and pepper plants and then become big nasty moths to lay more eggs on your poor plants to start the whole process all over again. Good news is, planting marigolds will keep them away. Reminds me of 'Grant'-pa Gray. He always planted marigolds in the yard. Guess we better get Dodge a gold fish since they are no threat to the garden.

Another fun thing about Utah, we get to do fireworks twice in July. I really didn't know that we were the only state until I was older. Pioneer day is a fun holiday for us because it is right after Addison's birthday. We did a Spongebob pinata. Addison was absolutely distraught that we were going to hang up her friend and beat him with a bat! She was hysterically crying... until the candy came out. I have some video that I will post when blogger decides to cooperate. We had a family BBQ at my Dad's. It was so much fun. I love getting together with the family. The kids had fun with water guns and a bucket of water. Ryan and I had a blast playing Badminton. We played with Josh and his girlfriend Jessica. I am so glad they came to the BBQ. Dodge was excited to have Zeke and Zodie to play with. There was plenty of food and fireworks. It was fun to spend some time with the extended family.

July 24th, 2010: Orem Fire Department Pancake Breakfast

Anyone who knows me probably is aware of my love for breakfast. What could be better than pancakes, eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, and a glass of OJ? Well, having a firefighter serve it to you... The Orem Fire Department had a pancake breakfast and we had to go. They had firetrucks, ambulances, and two life flight helicopters in the parking lot for kids to get in and see. The kids thought it was so cool to get in the trucks and the helicopters. They even had some gear for the kids to try on. If you ever have the chance to go to a fireman's breakfast, go and donate some money! Those guys rock!

July 23rd, 2010: Fiesta Days Rodeo

Dodge and Addison's first rodeo. Dodge wanted to ride the sheep like the other kids... until he actually saw the other kids riding the sheep. I admit, I did a little mutton bustin' as a kid and it was pretty scary. I ended up under the sheep while it ran around the arena. Dodge really loved the rodeo. He thought the bulls were pretty cool. He liked the rodeo clown too. Of course, he wasn't your average clown. He jumped a truck and trailer on a motorcycle. It's funny how being a mom changes you. I was scared for every single rider. I don't remember even thinking about that when I was younger. I don't know how those cowboys do it. It was fun to watch for one night though. I am glad the kids enjoyed it.

July 23rd, 2010: Provo Canyon Bike Ride

One of the things I miss about living up north is the trail that runs down Provo canyon. While we were up there, we rode from Vivian park to the bottom of the canyon. It was so beautiful. I am glad we were riding down and not up. Addison zonked out in the trailer, but Dodge had fun flying down the trail.

Addison's birthday celebration lasted all day long. Starting with the Beatles singing her Happy Birthday in the morning to the last of the present opening that night. She was so excited to get a rad Spongebob pinata, balloons, and a pink hippo sleeping bag pillow. She had a full day and enjoyed most of it... with the exception of the whole cave claustrophobia. Don't ask me how Dodge ended up in the Hippo bag. He is a goof, and we love him that way. Happy Birthday Addison! We love you very much and are so blessed to have such a sweet girl in our family.

We spent the afternoon up at Big Springs Park up Provo Canyon, better known as my mom's park. It was absolutely beautiful up there. The kids enjoyed playing in the water and eating cupcakes, ice cream, and watermelon. My friend Jenna and her daughter Maddy were able to join us. Maddy has this ability to bend right over and drink from a puddle on the ground. Gross, but still cute. Luckily we persuaded the girls to drink from the spigot instead. Dodge and Kaitlynn had a blast playing in the water. After spending a beautiful afternoon at the park, I can see why mom likes it so well. Like they really pay people to be there! Not fair!

So we started Addison's big day with a hike up to Timpanogos Cave. It has been quite a while since I had been to the caves and I forgot exactly how long of a hike it is up there. I was amazed at Dodge though. He hiked the whole way up and back. He did awesome! Grama Ruth and I switched off carrying Addison since they don't let you take strollers or anything else on the trail. We both were literally dripping sweat. So we made it to the top just in time for our tour (try saying 'for our tour' five times fast!) Come to find out, poor Addison is a bit claustrophobic. She didn't like the cave too much. Dodge thought they were okay. He didn't like being cold. The caves are 45 degrees year round. The best part is when they turn off all the lights. The guide asked us to raise our hands if we wanted the lights back on. Funny lady! After our tour of the caves it was time to make our way back down. Addison enjoyed the hike back down. She slept the whole way in my arms. It's was better than any P90X for sure. It was so beautiful up there. I wish I would have taken some pictures on the way up and down but I was busy carrying the birthday girl. The canyon is amazing. It is so beautiful and smells like pine trees. I am so glad we took the time to enjoy it.

We got to spend a week up at "Hotel Mooney" and Addison took advantage of the free internet provided there to get some "work" done. Addison had plenty of celebrating for her 2nd birthday. We started it off with a party at Grama and Papa Johnson's. She had a full Toy Story themed party. Grama even made some adorable red Jessie hat cookies. Addison absolutely loves the Toy Story movies and she was so excited. She had some broccoli for her birthday dinner. Broccoli is one of her favorite foods (weird, I know). After a good amount of veggies followed by some cake, she jumped right into the present opening. She got even more Toy Story with a set of Andy's Toys and a Jessie dress up. She had to put it on right away. It is too cute. She also got a Cinderella dress up. We got her a cute pink trike that has a handle so we can push and steer for her. For all of you who saw the Jeep driving, you know she needs quite a bit of help with the steering! Tuesday July 13th, 2010: Gunlock Reservoir

We originally planned to go hike around Red Cliffs out by Leeds but after the drive out there, we came to find the road was closed. So we headed to Gunlock instead. The kids pretty much love anything we can do outside. Dodge loved finding some wood and an old rope and he tried to make a boat out of all of it. He was a little disappointed to find it didn't float. Addison kept saying 'cah-cah' because of all the mud. She had some fun splashing in the water anyway. I am glad we got out there before this terrible heat set in. It is 110 degrees right now! Like I always say though, I'll take the heat for a little bit of the summer over shoveling snow in the winter. I really love the beautiful area we live in. The Red Rock is amazing. I feel lucky to wake up everyday and be able to see the red hills around us.

July 9th-11th: A Weekend In L.A.

Friday:
We drove down and had some dinner at "GG"(great-grandma) and Papa Cioffi's. Since it was Mindy's birthday we had a HUGE cake and some ice cream. It was so fun to spend some time with the family.Addison got a lot of kisses from GG and Dodge just about rocked that rocking horse to death. The kids always like to blow out everyone's candles. I don't know how that effects the wish situation...

Saturday:
Dodge and Addison went to Universal Studios with Grandma, Aunt Pam, and Carly. While they were have the time of their lives meeting Spongebob and going on the King Kong ride, Ryan, Dan, and I met up with Dennis, Patti, Chelsea, and Cammi. It was picture day at Dodger Stadium so we got to go on the field and see some of the Dodgers.

After the cubs won, we all met back at the Cheesecake Factory for some yummy grub. Addison loved playing in this fountain by the Hotel. She would have jumped right in if we would have let her.

Sunday:
Before we started our drive back home, GG and Papa Cioffi made us some delicious Mormon Wheat Cakes for breakfast. They were absolutely fantastic. We had to get a picture with GG and Papa. I love Dodge's frown in this picture... Classic!

Yes, this is my daughter in a princess dress up eating breakfast with her "Rella" princess barbie. Those of you who know me, know that I am far from being a fan of the "princess" stuff. This just goes to show that you might try and shape your kids into this kind of person or that, but really, they are who they are. I am just happy that she is happy.

This is an awesome scratch on Dodge's forehead. I guess he won't try and mess with Addison as much anymore, she fights back now! I still love those beautiful blue eyes of his. Melt my heart!

Now that Addison is in her toddler bed, she can get in and out as much as she wants. Last night, I guess she was just too tired to actually get back in. She fell asleep on her knees with her blankets tucked underneath. I wish I could fall asleep anywhere.

We spent the morning at the river. I think Duke had the funnest time out of all of us. He was running around like crazy! That was the first time he has ever actually played fetch and brought back the stick. It was great. Dodge is getting better at skipping rocks. The only problem is, he always wants to pick up and skip the hugest rock he can find.

Seven years. It's funny how all at once our first date can seem so long ago but then again, it feels like it was just yesterday. The best day of my life was spent kneeling with you at the altar. We rode our bikes on the Virgin River trail. Dodge asked if sometime we could go there with our swimming suits and play in the water. I decided, why wait? We went down to the River. It is true that the river is kinda stinky, and mucky. Ryan taught Dodge how to skip rocks. It has been so long since I last skipped a rock. It was fun. Dodge still needs some practice but he enjoyed the hunt for the perfect skipping rock. Addison threw some mud and waited into her waist... okay, I mean she swam. She had fun throwing some rocks in too. It's fun to enjoy some of the beautiful scenery we live so close too. I especially love this picture of Dodge skipping through the water. I think it captures him perfectly. He can't wait to go play at the river again.

Friday June 4th, 2010: Philadelphia

We flew in and out of Philadelphia. We headed in early on Friday to see the Liberty Bell before catching our flight. We saw the bell, walked around a bit, then headed to get what else, a philly cheesesteak. We had to try both Geno's and Pat's. They are the big steak rivals located across the street from one another. Hands down, Geno's was the best. The cheese whiz was fantastic. They had some cheese fries that were amazing too. Sorry I didn't get any pictures of Pat's or Geno's. What can I say, I was a little preoccupied with the delicious food.

We spent a lot of time on the beach. Every time we were at the beach, Addison wanted to be buried in the sand. Dodge was in the waves the whole time. I swam a couple of times but not for long. It was so cold. The sand is so fine, soft, and white. It was gorgeous. Definitely the best part of the vacation was the awesome beach. We all loved it.

Carlo's Bake Shop:

We started the day by stopping in Hoboken, NJ at Carlo's Bake Shop. We have a few "Cake Boss" fans in the family so it was a "must see" on the vacation to do list. I'm not really a fan of the show, but I am a fan of a good pastry. I had a Cannoli that was pretty good. Ryan went for the black and white cookie. Dodge picked a carrot cake cupcake with the thickest cream cheese frosting I've ever seen. Addison enjoyed a chocolate chip cookie. I gotta say though, it wasn't life changing.

New York Aquarium:

We headed into Coney Island and visited the New York Aquarium. The coolest parts were the sharks, the turtles, and a huge sea lion. Of course, it wouldn't have been a proper trip to New York without a spontaneous rain storm. We were bummed because not only did the Aquarium close early, but all of Coney Island pretty much closed down for the day. We didn't get to ride a single ride. It was pretty disappointing.

Nathan's Famous:

We had to visit the Original Nathan's Famous. This is where they do the annual hot dog eating contest on the 4th of July. We already had Nathan's on the Boardwalk for lunch so we weren't really hungry. Since its pretty much a tradition that Ryan has to eat something weird, huge, and/or disgusting on vacation, he decided to try out some fresh oysters. They were shucked right in front of our eyes. I had to try some since it was just a weird thing to get at a hot dog joint. I gotta say, it was delicious. I have been craving more since we got back home.

Toys R Us:

After our Coney Island trip was pretty much destroyed by the rain, we went to Times Square to visit the largest Toys R Us. It was the only part of the trip that Dodge really even cared about. He had been saving his money to shop at the biggest toy store. I am really glad we took him in. He loved it. We got him some Lego's and Addison got a Jessie doll from Toy Story. They liked the Ferris wheel too. They really gave us our money's worth, we went around 9 times. I was beginning to think they were never going to let us off. It was a long day and luckily the kids slept the whole ride home.

Monday May 31st, 2010: Beach Haven Township Memorial Day Parade

Beach Haven had a little parade for Memorial Day. They had the parade mandatory marching band. There were also police, lifeguards, the mayor, some old cars, and a lot of people on bikes. The whole thing was over in 15 minutes but the kids had fun waving their flags and watching the parade. Dodge and Ryan played an entire 18 holes of mini golf with the boys after the parade. Addison and I got in some shopping at Schooner's Warf. I could have spent the entire trip right on the island and not felt a bit bad about it.

Sunday May 30th, 2010: Barnegat Lighthouse, Long Beach Island

Located on the North end of the Island is this amazing lighthouse. Barnegat Lighthouse is 217 steps to the top and we went up every single one of them. The view from the top was awesome. The kids thought it was okay but I really loved it. Looking at the island from that view point was great. You don't realize how long the island is. It was beautiful and one of the highlights of the trip for me.

Ten Days and Counting...

Next Friday we are heading out to Long Beach Island, New Jersey. This is a picture on the beach there. I am more than excited to go back to one of our favorite vacation spots. They have a beautiful white sand beach that I could sit on all day long. In fact, I think I might just do that in ten days...

I got some great planters from my mom while I was up there. I figure, since I haven't killed any of my other plants yet (knock on wood!) I would plant some more. I have enjoyed having fresh herbs and I can't wait to make some salsa when we finally get some peppers and tomatoes from our plants. My thumb is looking a little less black and a little more green.

Papa Mooney and Grama Ruth came down to take Katie to Brian Regan at Tuacahn. They brought their bikes so we headed over to the snow canyon trail to ride. It was a lot of hills but the kids had fun flying down them on the way back. They had to play in the dirt while we were out there. Addison had a pretty good dirt mustache. I guess that means they enjoyed themselves. It is always great to have them come and visit. We always end up enjoying the outdoors while they are here.

I went up to visit and help clean up Grammy's house. She gave us all a scare by going into cardiac arrest last Monday night. Luckily my Mom was there with her. She ended up in ICU for a couple days and is now finally in rehab. The housing authority is making her house more energy efficient by putting in new windows, replacing the furnace, and insulating the whole basement. We had to get ready for them to come and finish the basement insulation and windows. Sounds easy, except there is a cold storage room filled with bottles and bottles of food storage dating clear back until 1952! My mom and I got in and got busy. We painted the kitchen too. The house is looking great so Grammy can feel right at home when she gets back. I am so glad I got to see my Grammy. I love her so stinking much. That gal is a real fighter. It amazes me how much they did with what they had. I realized how much that we are such an instant gratification generation. My Grammy was an amazing woman who did so much with so little. I don't need a bigger house, I don't need the newest and the best of everything. I am so blessed and I take it for granted nearly every day. I am going to try and be more grateful for all that I am blessed with. I want to teach my children all the values that my Grammy's generation mastered not out of choice, but out of necessity.

It has been way too long since I've seen my mom and her girls. These are pics of me with my mom and my sisters, Niecia and Kaitlyn.

These are the shelves that were packed with jars and jars. Not one of these jars were younger than me. It took three full loads to the dump to get to the bottom of it. Grama's kitchen got a new coat of paint. Amazingly, the yellow we picked out matched exactly the existing yellow that Grammy wanted.

I put some old lady curlers in Addison's hair. I thought it would be cute to do something a little different for her awkward hair phase. It didn't really take that long. The only problem is, her hair was stick straight again within about four hours.

Dodge and Ryan went to father's and sons. Last year they just came home after dinner and all the festivities. This year they actually stayed overnight in the tent. It was Dodge's first actual camping trip. He had a lot of fun but he said that the crickets kept him up at night because they were so loud. I sent the camera with hoping for a bunch of pictures. I got three of Dodge in mud and two of him next to the pond. Seriously. Dodge had some fun getting covered in mud, lighting marshmallows on fire, and playing with all the other boys there. He is really excited to go to Fish Lake and camp again this summer.

Ryan likes to spruce up the yard every now and again. Lately he has been on a mission to rid our yard of some plants that are... well, ugly. We went to the nursery Saturday and picked out a few new plants to add a little color to the yard. Ryan did a great job and they look amazing. Today, one of the beautiful lillies bloomed. I love it. I want these flowers all over the yard. I have been trying my hand at growing some herbs. I got a topsy turvy as an early mother's day present from the kids and planted it right away. I know the commercials are pretty cheesy, but my tomato plant is already growing and the herbs and peppers are doing really well too. Maybe next year we will find a spot to put in a small garden. I would love to grow my own vegetables. We'll see if my black thumb doesn't catch up with me.

I love, love, love this time of year here in Dixie. The weather is beautiful, everything is turning green, and all the flowers are blooming. We went for a bike ride on the trail down by the river. Dodge amazes me with how tough he is. It was about a five mile ride with the end being all back up the hill. He did really well. I wish I could say the same for myself. It was a nice afternoon.
